Sonic, Shadow and True NiGHTS Chao

Everyone wants these guys, but some people seem to have a lot of trouble actually getting them. Forget whatever else you've read; these instructions take out all the guesswork.

First of all, obviously, you need a baby Chao. Assuming you have one ready:

Pick your preferred Chao
Sonic|Shadow|True NiGHTS

Sonic Chao

Evolve your Chao to Neutral Run. You really only need six or seven levels on the Run stat, as long as you only give him green items. The key to evolving him fast is feeding him, so stuff that little guy full of fruit.

When you have an adult Neutral Run Chao, give him some more green items. You really don't need all that many, despite what the guides say. Put twenty levels on the Run stat to be safe - or you can go right up to level 99.

Now feed the Chao. A lot. See how high you can get his stamina stat. Level forty is good. Level sixty is even better. The more you feed him, the faster he will evolve.

As you feed him, you'll see him start to change: the green will dim to blue until the stripes are almost no longer visible, the three points will sweep back and down and a fourth point will begin to grow. It's difficult to see exactly when your Chao has fully evolved, but if he looks pure blue to you and hasn't changed visibly in a while, he's probably there.

Shadow Chao

Evolve your Chao to Dark Run. You really only need six or seven levels on the Run stat, as long as you only give him green items. The key to evolving him fast is feeding him, so stuff that little guy full of fruit.

When you have an adult Dark Run Chao, give him some more green items.

As you feed him, you'll see him start to change: the green will dim to black and the pale green streaks will go through a peachy colour to red, the three points will grow much larger and stronger and a fourth point will begin to grow. It's difficult to see exactly when your Chao has fully evolved, but if his stripes look pure red to you and he hasn't changed visibly in a while, he's probably there.

True NiGHTS Chao

Evolve your Chao to Neutral Fly. You really only need six or seven levels on the Fly stat, as long as you only give him purple items. The key to evolving him fast is feeding him, so stuff that little guy full of fruit.

When you have an adult Neutral Fly Chao, give him some more purple items. You really don't need all that many, despite what the guides say. Put twenty levels on the Fly stat to be safe - or you can go right up to level 99.

Now feed the Chao. A lot. See how high you can get his stamina stat. Level forty is good. Level sixty is even better. The more you feed him, the faster he will evolve.

As you feed him, you'll see him start to change: the pink will become a deeper purple, the two points will grow much larger and begin to curl round, and most impressively, his already large green wings will become massive golden-white ones. This is one impressive looking Chao. It's difficult to see exactly when your Chao has fully evolved, but if his colour seems pure and he hasn't changed visibly in a while, he's probably there.

There are no tricks involved. Do this and you will have a perfect looking Sonic, Shadow or True NiGHTS Chao in no time at all.

Of course, it does mean that your Chao will have one super stat and absolutely nothing in the others. If you want to make a Sonic Chao with level 99 in all stats, check out the advanced section on evolution cancel.

A tip for coloured Chao

If you're raising a coloured, shiny or metallic Chao, it can be especially difficult to judge when he's reached third evolution. The wing colour and shape, and the colour of the chao thing, are useful gauges. For Sonic and Shadow Chao, the wings and Chao thing should be pure blue or red respectively; for a NiGHTS Chao, ensure that the wings look white-gold. If they or the Chao thing look a bit "dirty" in colour, the Chao hasn't fully evolved yet.
