Aside from the regular fruit that fall from garden trees, you can give your Chao special fruit, and plant seeds to grow into new temporary trees. All fruit raise your Chao's stamina by at least four points - some raise it by five. Fruits and seeds are available from the Black Market for rings.
Hero Fruit (120 rings): Chao will favour the Hero side. Adult Dark Chao will not eat it.
I believe these
fruit are a waste of rings, because you can pet the Chao with a Hero character
two or three times and get exactly the same effect.
Dark Fruit (120 rings): Chao will favour the Dark side. Adult Hero Chao will not eat it.
I believe these
fruit are a waste of rings, because you can pet the Chao with a Dark character

Chao Fruit (200 rings): All stats go up by 5.
I've bought these quite often.
Round Fruit (80 rings): A fruit that some Chao like best.
When you take your Chao to the doctor, sometimes you'll learn that the Chao likes this fruit. Your Chao will eat this fruit very willingly. Otherwise, it doesn't do anything.
Square Fruit (80 rings): A fruit that some Chao like best.
When you take your Chao to the doctor, sometimes you'll learn that the Chao likes this fruit. Your Chao will eat this fruit very willingly. Otherwise, it doesn't do anything.
Triangle Fruit (80 rings): A fruit that some Chao like best.
When you take your Chao to the doctor, sometimes you'll learn that the Chao likes this fruit. Your Chao will eat this fruit very willingly. Otherwise, it doesn't do anything.
Tasty Fruit (from seeds): A very good tasting fruit.
It doesn't do anything special.
Strong Fruit (from seeds): A long life fruit. Raises stamina by 5.
This fruit extends your Chao's lifespan
by slowing ageing. If you want your Chao to reach second evolution, it's not a good
fruit to use.
Heart Fruit (300 rings): A fruit to make Chao love each other.
This fruit is
indispensable to a Chao breeder. Feed a Chao a heart fruit to bring him into season.
Two Chao that are in season will always mate.
Mushroom (300 rings): A food that raises intelligence and luck.
That's what I'm
told anyway. Int and Lck are the only stats we can't observe directly. I'm still
researching this one - but certainly, a mushroom or two couldn't hurt when you're raising stamina.
To plant a seed, you must have a Chao that knows the Shovel and Watering Can skill from the beginner races. Give the seed to this Chao and he'll walk around for a while then plant the seed. If he drops the seed, give it back to him and let him try again - it depends on him wandering over the right spot.
Hero Seed (400 rings): creates a tree that grows Hero Fruits.
Dark Seed (400 rings): creates a tree that grows Dark Fruits.
Round Seed (300 rings): creates a tree that grows Round Fruits.
Square Seed (300 rings): creates a tree that grows Square Fruits.
Triangle Seed (300 rings): creates a tree that grows Triangle Fruits.
Tasty Seed (200 rings): creates a tree that grows Tasty Fruits.
Strong Seed (500 rings): creates a tree that grows Strong Fruits.
All planted trees are temporary and will wither and die in a while. You can sometimes get more fruits out of them by persuading a Chao to water them. Watering a tree brings all the fruit on it to instant ripeness. Pick up a Chao with the Watering Can skill and put him down by the tree, and with any luck he'll decide to water it.
The really useful fruits (Heart, Chao) cannot be grown on trees, so I don't tend to bother with seeds. They might be useful if you have a large number of Chao in the garden and need more food than usual.
