Life cycle of Chao
When you hatch a Chao egg for the first time, the Chao has fifteen possibilities. He can evolve:
Hero: |
if you treat him well with Hero characters |
Neutral: |
if you treat him well with both types of character equally |
Dark: |
if you treat him well with Dark characters |
In addition he can also evolve into one of five body types.
Swim: |
if you give him Yellow animals or Chaos Drives |
Fly: |
if you give him Purple animals or Chaos Drives |
Run: |
if you give him Green animals or Chaos Drives |
Power: |
if you give him Red animals or Chaos Drives |
Stamina: |
if you give him no animals or Chaos Drives |
Raising your Chao to be Neutral is how you get the Sonic and True NiGHTS Chao. It can be quite difficult to keep your Chao balanced between Hero and Dark. I suggest you follow these steps:
Use a Hero character to give your Chao Chaos Drives until his stat is at around level 7. (You can certainly have more, but this is around the minimum you need if you're lazy)
Use a Dark character to feed your Chao until his stamina is around level 15.
Now stop and change back to the Hero character. Pet your Chao until his colour changes back to a nice pastel-coloured Neutral. The wings are a good guide: they should be pink and rounded, not red and spiky. If they start to get a downward curve you've gone too far - switch back to Dark and pet him a bit more.
Now leave your Chao alone and stand the character in the water while you read a book or something. (When you are in the water, your Chao cannot come up to you, so they won't get sad when you ignore them).
It can take up to an hour before your Chao evolves, but it should take less time if you fed him plenty.
It can be a real pain to get these guys to stay neutral because you can't see what you're doing. Develop an eye for colour and keep your attention on the wings. Even with a shiny Chao, the wings will always take the natural colour.
Red, spiky wings mean the Chao is Dark.
Pink rounded wings mean the Chao is Neutral.
Yellowish wings with a downward sweep mean the Chao is Hero.
The colour of the Chao thing (that floating bobble above his head) can also be useful.
